Famous Norwegians

Writers:

Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson: celebrated Norwegian author who received Nobel Prize in Literature in 1903. He is also known for his lyrics to the Norwegian National Anthem, "Ja, vi elsker dette landet." 

Henrik Ibsen: a famous playwright from the 19th Century. Some of his more famous works include "Peer Gynt" as well as "A Doll's House." 

Jo Nesbø: a modern crime novel writer, selling over 23 million books all over the world in 40 different languages. His more famous books include "The Snowman" and "The Bat." 

Musicians:

Edvard Grieg: a classic famous 19th Century composer. He is known for his rich expressive music of the Norwegian rural life, as well as European culture in songs like, In the Hall of the Mountain King from Peer Gynt. 

Ylvis: a modern tv talk show, triple threat brother duo, with talented music videos, such as the viral song: "What Does the Fox Say?" 

Alexander Rybak: a Belarusian-Norwegian composer, instrumentalist and singer who won the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, with his catchy song, "Fairytale." 

Sissel Kyrkjebø: talented soprano singer from Bergen, Norway who is known for her diverse vocal ranges and tones. 

Artists:

Johan Christian Dahl: "Father of Norwegian Landscape" painter from the first half of the 19th Century. Famous paintings include: Måbødalen and Fra Stedje i Sogn 

Edvard Munch: an Expressionist painter from the late 19th Century. His famous works include: The Scream and Madonna.

Gustav Vigeland: a famous Norwegian sculptor from the late 19th Century to the early 20th Century. His famous body sculptures are located at Frogner Park in Oslo, Norway. 


Explorers:

Roald Amundsen: during 1910-1912, he led an Arctic Expedition to the South Pole and became the first to reach the South Pole. 

Fridtjof Nansen: led an expedition to the North Pole and was the first person to travel so far north. Later he became a distinguished humanitarian.  

Thor Heyerdahl: a zoologist who proved his theory that South Americans were the ancient settlers of the Polynesian Islands by his famous Kon-Tiki Expendition, replicating the journey South Americans took to arrive to the islands, as it was deemed impossible by many.

Athletes:

Ole Einar Bjørndalen: a successful professional biathlete and holds the record for the most medals.

Marit Bjørgen: championed 6 times Olympic cross country skiing winner. 

Martin Ødegaard: professional soccer player, starting his career at the early age of 17, signing with Real Madrid.
