Fastelavn is the name for Carnival in Norway and other Northern European nations. In Norway, it is celebrated on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. On Fastelavn Sunday, many Norwegians celebrate by enjoying fastelavnsboller, sweet cream-filled cardamom buns. Schools and preschools mark the day by making fastelavnsris (pictured below), birch twigs decorated with colorful feathers, and there is a tradition for “hitting the cat out of the barrel,” a form of piñata.
